Une rentabilité élevée n’assure pas, en soi, le succès d’une entreprise. La Société Lyonnaise des Forces Motrices du Rhône a préféré, de 1892 à 1914, l’amortissement et la distribution à l’autofinancement des investissements massifs qu’autorisait l’expansion du marché. Elle ouvre ainsi le champ libre à ses principaux concurrents dans l’espace lyonnais ainsi qu’à leur entrée au sein de son conseil d’administration. Bien que dotée de disponibilités financières importantes, elle passe ainsi, dès 1931, dans le giron du groupe Durand.
