Economic activities in a colonial periphery: German trade and German enterprises in Russian Turkestan, 1890-1914

Les investissements allemands dans le Turkestan russe ont rencontré des limitations, dues aux relations exacerbées entre l’Allemagne et la Russie à la fin du XIXe siècle et au statut particulièrement essentiel du Turkestan pour l’Empire russe. Pour des raisons géopolitiques, le Turkestan était une province tsariste de première importance. Nonobstant ces lacunes, un petit nombre d’investisseurs allemands fut capable de s’adapter aux circonstances, et la partie périphérique de l’Empire russe située en Asie centrale devint une sorte de laboratoire pour ces acteurs, sans offrir de perspectives d’avenir et de succès futurs. Le but de cet article et d’éclairer un chapitre inconnu de l’histoire de la Russie impériale.

German investments in Russian Turkestan incurred limitations. They resulted from exacerbating relations between Germany and Russia at the end of the 19th century and from Turkestan’s crucial status within the Tsarist Empire. For geopolitical reasons Turkestan was a tsarist province of special importance. This is why foreign investors, especially Germans, were subject to restrictions. Notwithstanding these deficiencies, a small number of German investors were able to cope with these circumstances. For these actors, the Central Asian periphery of the Russian Empire appeared to be a kind of laboratory – providing no prospects for future success. The aim of the article is to shed some light on this unknown chapter of Russia’s imperial history.JEL Classification : E62, G3, G21, G31, H54, L71, L72, N13, N15
