S’inscrivant dans un courant de films sentimentaux qui évoquaient de façon mélodramatique la vie de jeunes orphelins, Lazarillo de Tormes fut le premier succès d’un film espagnol dans un festival international puisqu’il obtint l’Ours d’Or au Festival de Berlin en 1959. Cette adaptation cinématographique du premier roman picaresque par César Fernández de Ardavín est un bel exemple des limites imposées dans l’Espagne franquiste à la liberté artistique. Se résignant à collaborer avec les censeurs pour l’écriture du scénario, le cinéaste, tout en essayant de donner une touche d’authenticité à son film par l’emploi du noir et blanc et le tournage en décors naturels dans les villes de Castille où se déroulaient les aventures du jeune pícaro, a profondément modifié et même trahi l’œuvre littéraire dont il s’est inspiré en évitant toute allusion satirique au clergé et en ajoutant une fin moralisatrice.
