Le premier grand article que Taine consacre à un romancier, Dickens, paraît le 1er février 1856. Il contient déjà les éléments essentiels d’une réflexion sur le roman contemporain que Taine développera en 1857 avec l’article sur Thackeray et en 1858 avec sa longue étude sur Balzac. Le roman selon Taine est le genre qui doit viser une sorte d’impassibilité à la fois esthétique et scientifique, contre le jugement moral traditionnellement associé aux genres de la satire et de l’élégie. Le roman fait face à la grandeur de la réalité : à la fois ce qui est admirable et ce qui est mesurable.

The first major article Taine dedicated to a novelist, Dickens, was published on 1st February 1856. It already contains the essential elements of a reflection on the contemporary novel which Taine will develop in 1857 with his article on Thackeray and in 1858 with his long study of Balzac. The novel according to Taine is the genre that needs to aim for a kind of both aesthetic and scientific impassivity, in contrast to the moral judgement traditionally associated with satire and elegy. The novel is confronted with the grandeur of reality: with both what is admirable and with what is measurable.
