Family history and the experience of illness among patients with acquired brain injury and those close to themDuring psychotherapeutic work with adult patients with acquired brain-injury and their families there is a constant to and fro between the particular experience of the illness, the way in which it integrates into personal and family history, and the way in which that history impacts the experience of the illness. The qualitative research presented here among brain-injured patients and their families aims to understand the complex impact of the wide diversity of personal and/or family life experiences on the way the illness is experienced. This complexity needs to be taken into account in the psychotherapeutic approach of patients and their families.
