ResumeDans la sphère politique allemande contemporaine, Hannah Arendt jouit d’un statut particulier presque iconique. Les politiciens de tout bord se réfèrent à elle comme une autorité quand il s’agit de parler de démocratie; les institutions s’inscrivent dans son héritage et le film de Margarethe von Trotta a rajouté une épaisseur à la représentation publique qui perçoit Arendt comme un génie philosophique. Cet article appréhende Arendt comme un lieu de mémoire allemand. Plus précisément, le film de von Trotta révèle combien une approche académique est nécessaire pour protéger l’oeuvre d’Arendt de ces admirateurs qui l’utilisent pour leurs propres agendas. Cependant, cela implique aussi de présenter clairement les ambivalences et, parfois, les aspects troublants de cet auteur important.

Hannah Arendt has become a reference of almost iconic status in the contemporary German political sphere. Politicians from different political backgrounds refer to her as an authority on democracy; institutions lay claim to her heritage and Margarethe von Trotta’s movie on Arendt has added another layer to the public representation of Arendt as a philosophical genius. This paper takes a closer look at Arendt as a German lieu de mémoire: that is, as an object of projection. In particular von Trotta’s movie shows that a sober and scholarly approach is needed to protect Arendt’s work from admirers who use her for their own agendas. This would include also the necessity to state clearly the ambivalences and sometimes disturbing aspects of this important author.
