Figure 1 – Examples of plant formations in the Arabian Peninsula. A= Open forest formation of Juniperus excelsa ssp. polycarpos in the higher altitudes of the al-Hajar Mountains (Oman); B= Formation of hygrophilous trees and shrubs (e.g., teloukat fig tree, oleander) with date palm growing in the bed of the Wadi al-Awabi (Oman); C= Dune fields covered by psammophilous shrubby and herbaceous taxa in the Wahiba sands (Oman); D= Halophilous species formation dominated by Halopeplis perfoliata growing in coastline areas at Tell Abraq near the Umm al-Quwayn (U.A.E.); E= Monospecific mangrove of Avicennia marina in the Qurm laguna near Muscat (Oman); F= Date palm garden in the al-Ula oasis (Saudi Arabia) with the three levels of the oasis agrosystem (date palms, fruit tree, annual and perennial crops such as cereals, pulses and vegetables).
