Cet article repose sur uneétude d'anthropologie historique à Episkepsi. un village de montagne à Corfou. Un riche matériel d'archives apermis de suivre l'évolution de sa population et de son organisationéconomique pendant plus de deux siècles. Pendant la période del'entre-deux-guerres la réformeagraire fait des anciens colons des pro­priétaires de petites exploitations en même temps que la technologiemoderne fait son apparition au village. Ceci a bouleversé les rapportssociaux, mais les paysans se sont vite adaptés à la nouvelle réalité touten concervant leconoiflie traditionnelle basée sur la monoculture del'olivier, qui devient le seul produit commercialisé du village.Si Episkepsi est actuellement assez prospère et en profite pouradopter un mode de vie moderne, c’est parce quelle a su s’ouvrir aumonde extérieur et échapper ainsi à son isolement géographique, touten concervant certaines structures traditionnelles qui assurent la sur­vie de la communauté en tant qu'unité sociale.

This paper is based on a historical anthropological study carried outat Episkepsi, a mountain village in Corfu. Archival material has helped to trace the evolutionof the demographic and economic struc­tures of the community for more than two centuries. During theinter-war period the peasant serfs (coloni) became land owners thanksto the agrarian reform, at the same time when modern technologywas being introduced in the village economy. This produced a radical change in termsof social relations of production, but the village soonadapted to the new reality while pursuing the traditional economybased upon olive cultivation—which has become the only commer­cialised production of the village.Episkepsi is now rather prosperous and has been able to adopt amodern way of life. It has broken its geographic isolation by openingitself to the wider society, but it has also preserved part of its tradi tional structure, thus ensuring the survival of the community as asocial unit.
