The many faces of epidemiology: evolutionary epidemiology

Résumé 0

"Abstract We review important issues revealed bythe application of the evolutionary theory to epidemiologicalproblems. The scope is restricted toinfectious diseases and the evolution of virulenceas a consequence of public health strategies to controltransmission. We focus on the discussion aboutthe possibility of virulence management and explorecurrent scenarios in which recent advancesin molecular biology and genetics offer new toolsto monitor and change diversity among pathogens, vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. We stressthe need to integrate the analytical framework ofepidemiology into population genetics and evolutionarytheory. We anticipate as an outcome ofthis process the development of study designs andanalytical tools to predict the evolutionary implicationsof control measures in the population andsurveillance mechanisms to continuously monitorthe changes in pathogen virulence patterns.Communication among modelers, epidemiologistsand molecular biologists is essential in order todesign model-driven field trials and to developdata-driven analytical tools leading to conclusivefindings that can inform the public health orienteddecision making process."
