The inbreeding paradox in invasive species

Résumé 0

"One of the most relevant topics in the biology of invasionconcerns an inbreeding paradox: how do exotic species that usuallyinvade new territories in small numbers, thus suffering theeffects of inbreeding, become successful invaders. To explain thisparadox, it has been argued that high migration rates and repeatedintroductions of exotic species take place so as to overcomelow genetic diversity and inbreeding. However, severalsingle episodes of exotic species introduction have occurred thatcannot be explained by this hypothesis. An attempt is made tosolve this paradox by considering that invaders are not only ableto modify the new environment, but also suffer modificationsunder the influence of the new environment. The possible role ofepigenetic adaptations and adaptive mutations is postulated inorder to explain the successful adaptation of invaders in theirnew environment."
