Ces deux questions, auxquelles s’ajouta celle de la condition des serfs, commandèrent la vie politique de la principauté pendant toute la première moitié du xixe siècle. Aucune solution viable n’ayant été trouvée, ces problèmes se posèrent avec acuité lors de la révolution de 1848 et de la guerre qui en résulta. La Transylvanie ne fut pas réunie à la Hongrie avant 1867 et les Roumains se mirent à chercher leur avenir hors de la monarchie.

The Transylvanian Diet answered in the negative in 1791. These two questions, together with that of the condition of the serfs, dominated the political life of the principality throughout the first half of the 19th century. As no viable solution was found, these problems became acute during the revolution of 1848 and the resulting war. Transylvania was not reunited with Hungary until 1867, and the Romanians began to seek their future outside the monarchy.
