En décembre 2014, M. et Mme B. ont accompagné leur fils Gabriel dans sa courte vie. Le diagnostic de trisomie 13 avait été porté pendant la grossesse, Gabriel était porteur de malformations compromettant son pronostic vital à court terme. Trois ans après, ils livrent leur témoignage sur ce qu’ils ont vécu et comment ils l’ont vécu. Ils racontent leur parcours : depuis l’annonce des malformations, la poursuite de la grossesse, la valorisation de ce temps, notamment avec leurs aînés, l’élaboration du projet de naissance et d’accompagnement de leur fils. Ils abordent leurs motivations à l’élaboration d’un tel projet, le regard porté par les professionnels sur l’accompagnement et la vie de Gabriel. Ils évoquent également les maladresses rencontrées, les attentions particulières, ce qu’ils ont ressenti, ce qui les a aidés, ce qui les a gênés, tout au long de la grossesse et de la vie de Gabriel. Parallèlement à cela, l’équipe de soins palliatifs qui a accompagné ce couple dans ce projet porte elle aussi un regard sur cette situation qui lui a permis d’évoluer dans sa propre culture palliative. Chacun trouve donc chez l’autre des ressources pour avancer sur son propre chemin.

In December 2014, Mr and Mrs B. provided palliative care to their son Gabriel until the end of his short life. Gabriel was diagnosed with trisomy 13 when Mrs B. was pregnant. He suffered multiple malformations compromising his chances to live long. Three years later, Mr and Mrs B. report what they experienced with Gabriel: the announcement of the malformations; the continuation of the pregnancy; how they lived this time especially with their older children; how they collaborated with the professionals to implement a specific plan for Gabriel’s birth and accompanying palliative care. They discussed their motivations to execute such a plan; they provided an account of how the professionals received the plan and took care of Gabriel during his life. They mentioned the particular attention of the professionals for Gabriel and for themselves, but also some inconsiderate acts or words encountered. They related how it felt throughout Gabriel’s pregnancy and life, what helped them and what did not. In parallel, the palliative care team that worked together with Mr and Mrs B. in this plan also gave an account of how they handled the case, and of how it allowed them to evolve in their own palliative culture. This is the story of how each one finds in the other the resources to go forward.
