"Existing research on gender differences in depressivesymptoms among Mexican adolescents is limitedto studies conducted in Mexico City. The purpose of thisstudy was to continue the investigation of gender and depressionamong male and female adolescents living inMexico. The results of the scores of two groups of adolescentsthat participated in the study indicated no significantgender differences on depression as measured by the Spanishversion of the Center for Epidemiological Studies DepressionScale (CES-D). These findings contradicted all but oneprevious study of gender differences in adolescent depression-research which studied adolescents living in developedversus developing countries. Several alternativeexplanations, including how the effect of living in a rapidlydeveloping country, such as Mexico, might be impactinggender and depression in Mexican adolescents, were explored. In addition, stress, acculturation, sex-typed personalitycharacteristics, and suicidal ideation were discussed.Additional research into the relationship between genderand depression among adolescents living in Mexico wasrecommended."
