Capturing elephant in Northeast India The Khamti are experts in capturing elephants. They do it using a method called mela shikar. The term comes from Assamese (and Hindi) combining fair (mela) and hunting (shikar). This method consists of catching a wild elephant with a large rope, the phand used as a lasso that comes to circle a leg or neck of the animal.
