"Around the world cigarette smoking causes many preventable diseases and deaths. Smo-king is more than a simple habit as many smokers meet criteria for nicotine dependence.Cigarette smoking prevalence changes according to the population being investigated. Theprevalence of cigarette smoking among Colombian outpatients who meet criteria for mentaldisorders and the general population are similar, almost 15-18 per cent. Up to date, studieson smoking prevalence among patients dwelling in psychiatric hospitals are limited. Smo-king is a complex topic in all populations. Some studies suggest that institutionalized patientsdeal with risk factors that increase the possibility of smoking. This paper explores thesefactors and summarizes general strategies for reducing cigarette smoking among these patientslike forbidding smoking in hospitals, using low effective doses, and preferring medicationwith few side effects"
