Résumé En

What is the situation of African literatures written in English in terms of translation ? For some time, more and more works have been translated into French. But the task undoubtedly remains a difficult one, because of cultural connotations, and because of colloquial varieties of Africanised English. Thus, the translator is divided between a desire to « greet the foreigner » (Antoine Berman), a desire to keep to the text, and a wish to walk across intercultural thresholds. This paper examines the predicament of the translator by drawing upon concrete examples from African literatures.
