The verbal expression of madness or mental deficiency in the beti proverbs of south Cameroon For the Betis of South Cameroon, «mental deficiency» is related to a particular conception of illness. Mental deficiency or madness are not yet treated medically. This anomaly is first of all a disorder disrupting the order of human beings (the social order) and the order of things (the cosmic order) before being acknowledged as an individual or hereditary suffering. The analysis of the Beti proverbs having to do with this type of disturbance shows to what extent this mental deficiency is socialized. This analysis also raises the problem of the nature of intelligence as a social standard of survival and adherence to the rules of the group. Any therapeutic initiative should take this information into account.

Chez les Beti du Sud-Cameroun, la «déficience intellectuelle» participe de la conception particulière de la maladie. La «déficience intellectuelle » ou la folie sont loin d’être médicalisées. Cette anormalité est d’abord un désordre perturbant l’ordre des êtres (ordre social) et des choses (ordre cosmique) avant d’être reconnue comme une souffrance individuelle ou familiale. L’analyse des proverbes beti ayant trait à ce type de perturbation montre à quel point la déficience mentale est socialisée. Cette analyse pose aussi le problème de la nature de l’intelligence comme norme sociale de survie et de soumission à la loi du groupe. Toute initiative thérapeutique devrait tenir compte de ces données.
