The article analyses and compares a number of theories of the firm according to their implicit or explicit conception of information, economic competence and of the firm. It intends to demonstrate that the emergence of the notion of economic competence of the firm implies to relax the assumption of exogeneous information, the methodology of sustantial rationality, and to define the firm like an organisation, i.e. a cognitive and economic process of coordination of individual competences. To conclude, two main analytical developments of the notion of economic competence are studied.

L'article analyse et compare un certain nombre de théories de la firme du point de vue de leur conception, implicite ou explicite, de l’information, de la compétence et de la firme. Il veut montrer que l’émergence de la notion de compétence économique de la firme se traduit par l’abandon de l’hypothèse d’information exogène, de la méthodologie de la rationalité substantielle, et par l’identification de la firme à une organisation, c’est-à-dire à un processus, tant cognitif qu’économique, de coordination et de structuration des compétences individuelles. En conclusion, deux principaux développements analytiques de la notion de compétence économique sont mis en évidence.
