Medical translation belongs to the field commonly known as “specialised translation”. Texts falling within this category distinguish themselves from ordinary language by employing a specific terminology characterised by a form of denotation which is intended to reinforce the scientific credentials of the content. Medecine is nevertheless a human science, and this study will attempt to show that medical discourse is in fact a sociolect. As such it is frequently connoted, employing imprecise or even inexact terminology. Such texts present many challenges, not all of which are necessarily connected to medical science. A translator must be fully conscious of this if she or he is to provide a correct rendering of “what the text does”.

La traduction médicale appartiendrait à ce que l’on appelle communément la traduction des textes de spécialité. Ceux-ci recourent à une terminologie particulière, différente de la langue générale et caractérisée par une dénotation censée avaliser la scientificité du propos. Pourtant, la médecine est une science humaine et cette étude tentera de montrer que le discours médical est en réalité un sociolecte, souvent connoté, à la terminologie imprécise, voire inexacte. Il véhicule de nombreux enjeux, parfois étrangers à la science médicale elle-même, dont le traducteur devra prendre pleinement conscience pour rendre «ce que le texte fait».
