A Little-Known Medieval Tax, the brennerie. A Linguistic and Historical Analysis. Historians have shown a real interest in seigneurial taxes, but only few studies have been devoted to the formation of the words that compose this field. Dealing with one of them in particular, the brennerie, this article proposes a review of the works carried out on the subject, not satisfactory since they mix up different things. It then proposes to go back to the occurrences of this word in different kinds of sources and to examine them. The analysis then deals with the construction of the word and other comparable or synonymous. Cross-examination of these data reveals a chronological evolution showing how the name of a real tax turned into a synonym of a seigneurial right.

L’intérêt des historiens pour le prélèvement seigneurial est réel ; peu d’études cependant ont été consacrées au champ sémantique des redevances et à la formation des mots qui le composent. Portant plus spécifiquement sur la brennerie, cette étude propose un bilan des travaux réalisés sur le sujet, peu satisfaisants car présentant de nombreuses confusions, avant de proposer un retour aux attestations de ce lexème dans les sources elles-mêmes suivi de leur examen. L’analyse porte ensuite sur la formation du mot et d’autres formations comparables ou synonymiques. Enfin, l’étude croisée de ces données met en évidence une évolution chronologique dévoilant comment l’appellation d’une redevance, de réelle, devient seulement synonyme d’un droit seigneurial.

Een weinig bekende middeleeuwse belasting, de brennerie. Taalkundige en historische analyse. Historici tonen een echte belangstelling voor taksen gelinkt aan heerlijke rechten, maar slechts weinig studies buigen zich over de vorming van de zeer rijke terminologie terzake. Dit artikel stelt een overzicht voor van de studies over brennerie ; ze zijn zelden bevredigend omwille van de verwarring in de concepten. Wij keren terug naar de oorspronkelijke bronnen waar dit woord in voorkomt en bekijken die aandachtig. Daarna behandelen we de vorming van het woord en van andere die gelijkaardig zijn of dezelfde betekenis hebben. Tenslotte toont kruisonderzoek van de gegevens een chronologische evolutie van effectieve taks naar een synoniem voor heerlijk recht.
