From GLO to VARIA : Twenty years of INRP primary school research into the didactics of spoken language in French This paper goes back over twenty years of INRP research into the didactics of spoken language in primary schools. It aims to bring out the main aspects of this work, from the GLO research (research into spoken language) to the VARIA research (research into variations in spoken language). The fact that the VARIA research was never completed shows that research into the didactics of spoken language presents many difficulties, especially as regards research into variations in spoken language. Nonetheless, the fact remains that this period of INRP research has enabled us to develop the main principles of an ethical and democratic language education.

L'article revient sur vingt ans de recherches INRP en didactique de l'oral à l'école. Il vise à faire émerger les grandes lignes de force, de la recherche GLO à la recherche VARIA. L'inachèvement de la recherche VARIA souligne les difficultés d'une recherche didactique sur l'oral, en particulier dans une optique variationniste. Il reste cependant que ces vingt ans de recherches INRP ont élaboré les grands principes d'une éducation langagière éthique et démocratique.
