Codification in the United States of America. The lack of recognition given to codification in the United States is a reflection of the role played by the common law in the legal system which prohibits a legal text from being considered the exclusive or universal source of law in a particular area. Certain objectives of codification (unity, transparency, coherence) are sought by other means (model or standard-form statutes, restatements, Law Revision Commissions), but systematisation remains for the moment a preoccupation which is alien to the American System.
