Leibniz décrit dans ce texte de 1710 sa machine arithmétique, sur laquelle il travaillait dès 1673, et qui permet de faire les multiplications en décalant une partie mobile d’un cran vers la gauche, comme lorsqu’on pose une multiplication à la main. Cette machine constituait un progrès certain par rapport à la machine à calculer de Pascal de 1645 (dossier BibNum). Le procédé inventé par Leibniz a été en œuvre dans toutes les machines à calculer mécaniques jusqu’aux années 1960, avant l’apparition du calcul électronique.

In this text of 1710 Leibniz described his arithmetical machine, on which he worked from 1673. It allows to do multiplications by moving a mobile part of a notch towards the left, just as when we do multiplication with our hands. This machine represented significant progress in comparison to Pascal's calculating machine of 1645 (file BibNum). The process invented by Leibniz was used in all mechanical calculating machines until 1960s, before electronic calculation appeared.
