Les enjeux de la traduction dans le champ littéraire

Cette étude propose de définir la traduction de la culture à partir de la sociologie de Pierre Bourdieu (et notamment des notions de champ et d'habitus). Analysant brièvement le cas de la littérature américaine (roman réaliste et science-fiction), l'auteur montre comment les "manières de traduire" le roman américain concourent à faire bouger le champ littéraire français. Introduisant de nouveaux modèles socio-esthétiques dans le champ littéraire dominant et contribuant à l'émergence d'un champ spécifique pour la science-fiction, la traduction n'en est pas moins un coup de force par lequel est imposée la problématique socio-politique légitime, qui tend à accréditer l'opinion selon laquelle l'American Way of Life est nécessairement située à l'horizon de la société française. La traduction apparaît ainsi comme ambiguë, à la fois instrument de changement social et instrument d'imposition d'un avenir "dicté" pour la société française.

This study proposes to view the "translation of culture" from the standpoint of Bourdieu's sociology (and specially using the notions of field and habitus). Briefly analyzing the case of American literature (the realist novel and science fiction), the author of the article describes how the manner of translation modifies the French literary field. In introducing new socio-esthetic models into the dominant literary field (mainly occupied by the realist novel) and in contributing to the emergence of a specific field for science fiction, translation is nonetheless a coup — one by which a legitimate socio-political problematics is imposed — that tends to accredit the opinion that the American Way of Life is necessarily situated in the horizon of French society. Thus, translation appears ambiguous, both an instrument of social change and an instrument that imposes a "dictated" future on French society.
