Le greffage du réel dans Oliver Twist se manifeste par les incursions du vocabulaire technique dans le discours du narrateur. Les termes médicaux et légaux, qui surgissent de temps à autre dans son discours, sont autant de manifestations de la rigidité et de la déshumanisation qui se sont progressivement emparées de la société victorienne. Deux stratégies distinctes de traduction de ces occurrences sont notables parmi les quatre traductions étudiées : deux des traducteurs reproduisent le greffage du vocabulaire spécialisé, tandis que les deux autres procèdent à un dégreffage presque systématique. La théorie de la fonction du langage ainsi que la théorie du registre sous-tendent ces choix traductifs.

The grafting of the real into Oliver Twist is embodied by the incursion of technical vocabulary in the discourse of the narrator. The medical or legal terms, which occasionally crop up in the narrator’s discourse, are the embodiment of the dehumanizing rigidity, which was increasingly gaining ground in the Victorian society. Two antagonistic strategies of translation are noticeable among the four translations under scrutiny: two of the translators reproduce the grafting of specialized vocabulary while the two others ungraft it almost systematically. The theory of the function of language as well as the theory of register underpin the various translation choices.
