Martine Chard-Hutchinson, « La trace de l'autre dans "The Pagan Rabbi" de Cynthia Ozick et "The Loudest Voice" de Grace Paley », Journal of the Short Story in English, ID : 10670/1.13wruh
The purpose of this article is to show that Otherness plays an important role in both short stories and that the Other can be approached from two different angles. While Otherness in "The Pagan Rabbi' being the result of the confrontation between Hellenism and Hebraism is expressed in terms of philosophy and religion, it has strong social connotations in Paley's short story and is mainly expressed by the voice metaphor as main vehicle of the identity-alterity tension. Both can ultimately be seen as illustrations of Derrida's view of alterity as "violence" and paradox.
