Describing family education in terms of dimensions rather than types presents several theoretical and psychometric advantages. The present study examined the possibility of substituting the “regularity” and “flexibility” dimensions for the three types of family environment structure (FES) described by Lautrey (1980). We asked 260 families with 8-year-old children to complete the typological and dimensional forms of the FES questionnaire, given in counter-balanced order, and studied the convergent and predictive structural validity (LISREL model) of the dimensional form. This form was found to be far more reliable than the typological form. In addition, it allows for relations between family education and variables such as socio-cultural environment and academic performance to be studied in a more analytical way. We conclude by presenting possible ways of optimizing the dimensional questionnaire.
