Children’s literature devoted to situations of disability can represent a mediator and support for inclusive pedagogical approaches. To assess their potential for this purpose, we have examined seventeen books bearing on education in specialised settings chosen from a body of ninety French language books published in the 21st century, whose subject-matter was devoted to sensory and motor deficiencies (blindness and deafness) and to neuro-developmental disorders (Down’s syndrome and autism). We aim to identify the essential common characteristics (feelings of heroes in a situation of disability, representations of the specialized setting and institutional/family relations), and in terms of the type of disability; to draw a parallel fiction/reality (inclusion and its evolution); and to highlight the interest and limitations of a potential renewal of these books with the aim of sensitizing readers.
