Pierre Meneton et al., « Unemployment as a major public health issue », La Revue de l'Ires, ID : 10670/1.88071c...
Studies from several countries, along with data recently compiled in France, suggest that the impact of unemployment on health goes much farther than a simple increase in suicide rates. Rates of chronic disease, heart disease, and cancer all appear to be considerably higher in the unemployed than in the active workforce. The mechanisms whereby unemployment may lead to a long-term decline in health have yet to be uncovered: Increased exposure to behavioral risk factors, reduced access to the healthcare system, and more direct organic effects are all possibilities. Healthcare workers should be made aware of the risk to the unemployed to help mitigate its impact as much as possible.
