Organe vital et aux performances inégalées dans le reste du monde animal, le cerveau humain n’en finit pas de nous surprendre. Les progrès dans la connaissance de son fonctionnement au cours des dernières décennies ont été considérables. Mais il reste encore beaucoup à découvrir et à explorer, pour à la fois comprendre comment l’homme grandit, réfléchit, pense, apprend, s’adapte, ressent…, avancer sur les moyens d’améliorer le fonctionnement (notamment en matière d’apprentissage) du cerveau et d’en réparer les dysfonctionnements, qu’ils soient mécaniques, génétiques, pathologiques… C’est pourquoi la revue Futuribles a décidé de commencer cette année 2019 par un numéro très largement consacré au cerveau humain, premier volet d’une série qui sera complétée au cours des mois à venir.Cet article de Grégoire Borst constitue une entrée en matière destinée à présenter au lecteur la façon dont fonctionne le cerveau humain. Que sait-on aujourd’hui de la façon dont se construit le cerveau, du stade embryonnaire à l’âge adulte ? À quel rythme s’opère cette construction ? Comment le système neurologique se met-il en place ? Quelle est l’architecture générale du cerveau et à quelles aptitudes spécifiques renvoient ses différents éléments ? Le cerveau dispose-t-il de capacités d’adaptation particulières ; est-il influencé, dans sa construction et son fonctionnement, par l’environnement familial, socio-économique, etc. ? Telles sont les grandes questions ici explorées afin de bien comprendre le fonctionnement de cet organe, à une époque où la concurrence homme-machine est de plus en plus pointée du doigt, au travers notamment des progrès de l’intelligence artificielle.
