Étienne Bourdon et al., « The History and Geography CAPES Exam : The Issue of Professionalization », Vingtième Siècle. Revue d’histoire, ID : 10670/1.bd43ff...
This article reacts to the on-going reform of competitive teaching examinations, which the Ministry of Education says it seeks to “professionalize”. Analysing what professionalization can mean for candidates who, by definition, have never taught a class, the authors of this work present a historical overview of the debate surrounding the history and geography CAPES by examining recent discussions and key texts. By refusing to adopt a binary perspective that would establish an opposition between pedagogy and science, the authors demonstrate that professionalization at the recruitment level cannot be understood without reference to the discipline’s epistemology, lest one merely reproduce classroom models devoid of all critical thinking.
