This article seeks to define the meaning given in the humanities to the term literacy in order to describe the specificities of the world of writing and the appropriation of its functions, by distinguishing the notion from a more restricted one. The history of the term in different French-speaking countries as well as that of terms that can be associated with it, semantically close or opposed, reveals a French sensitivity to the linguistic and orthographic norm. The article focuses on the diffusion of the term in international institutions and its particular use in education in France, but also in research and training.

Cet article s’attache à définir le sens accordé en sciences humaines au terme littératie pour décrire les spécificités de l’univers de l’écrit et l’appropriation de ses fonctions, en distinguant la notion de celle d’alphabétisation, plus restreinte. L’histoire du terme dans différents pays francophones ainsi que celle des termes qui peuvent lui être associés, sémantiquement proches ou opposés, révèle une sensibilité française à la norme linguistique et orthographique. L’article s’intéresse à la diffusion du terme dans les institutions internationales et à son usage particulier dans l’enseignement en France, mais aussi dans la recherche et la formation.
