Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, La Réunion s’est rapidement positionnée en faveur du régime de Vichy. Les principes de la Révolution nationale se sont adaptés à la réalité coloniale. Plus qu’une passivité de principe face à un régime coercitif, nous pouvons déceler une logique d’acceptation tant des autorités coloniales que d’une partie de la société réunionnaise. Le principe d’une régénération nationale par le biais de l’Empire imprègne l’ensemble des discours structurant une propagande dynamique et riche d’enseignement.

During the Second World War, the island of Reunion promptly declared itself in favour of the Vichy regime. The principles of the National Revolution adjusted to the colonial way of life. Rather than a form of inertia in the face of a coercive regime, it amounted to an acceptance both by the colonial authorities and a part of Reunion’s society. The principle of national regeneration on the basis of Empire was reflected in all the speeches, producing forceful and highly instructive propaganda.
