Dans cet article, Diana Taylor revient sur la distinction qu’elle opère entre archive et performance. Elle analyse les tentatives illusoires de conserver des performances qui risquent de devenir canoniques, s’opposant ainsi à un aspect fondamental du répertoire. Elle étudie les différents aspects rhétoriques qui entourent le concept mis en avant par l’UNESCO de patrimoine culturel immatériel pour montrer les ramifications politiques et économiques à l’œuvre derrière le cadre institutionnel. Elle souligne le rôle néfaste des forces économiques dans des contextes où les dimensions esthétiques et culturelles pourraient donner l’impression d’être dominantes, transformant la performance en produit. Elle révèle les stratégies de marketing dans les « re-performances » de Marina Abramović et l’installation « The Artist is Present », qui débouchent sur un résultat artistique totalement différent de ses aspirations à l’authenticité et à la présence.
