References to the concept of representation are becoming increasingly commonin studies on language learning and use. Of particular concern for the presentpaper are learners' representations of plurilingual competence and theirmotivation and attitudes towards languages. We argue that representations aredeveloped in a complex interaction involving different languages and learners.
