The Suburbs according to John Cheever: From Distinction to Indistinctness

This article is an attempt to grasp how as a writer Cheever capitalizes on the urban and social realities of American suburbia to project on them visions and formal patterns which owe to his own ambivalence and crystallize in the motifs of indetermination or indistinctness. Far from being a mere portraitist of the suburbs, John Cheever has turned them into a stage dedicated to fantasy inscenations of the permeability of frontiers, the blurring of boundaries and decompartmentalization. Cheever's suburbs are always imaginative constructs, a choice territory for the elaboration of parabolic narratives and allegories betraying a distaste for binarity and bipolarity and conveying the impossibility of maintaining any hortus conclusus, while space as he landscapes and develops it owes a lot to his lifelong concern for the representation of psychic life.

Dans cet article, j’ai pu revenir sur certaines conclusions de mes travaux antérieurs sur Cheever en soulignant plus particulièrement que celui qui a donné ses lettres de noblesse à la banlieue dans la fiction américaine, loin d’en être un simple portraitiste, en faisait un territoire de choix pour construire un espace symbolique et élaborer récits paraboliques et allégories visant à représenter la perméabilité des frontières et le dépassement nécessaire de la bipolarité. À la faveur de ce retour à l’œuvre de Cheever, je me suis également intéressée aux prolongements de son œuvre dans le champ filmique, qui témoignent de la persistance de sa vision des banlieues dans l’imaginaire américain notamment : au-delà du film The Swimmer (1968) de Frank Perry, on relève plus récemment Parc, long métrage d’Arnaud Des Pallières (2009), et la série télévisée Mad Men (2007-2015).
