La pratique du community organizing est encore peu connue en France et interroge. Est-elle une pratique politique véritablement émancipatrice ? Les dérives récentes managériales et libérales de celle-ci ont rendu méfiants de nombreux militants. Pour répondre à cette question, nous interrogeons dans un premier temps les positions théoriques de Saul Alinsky à la lumière de celles de John Dewey. L’étude comparative des convergences et divergences de ces deux auteurs nous permet alors de formuler avec précision les critiques du community organizing à partir de sa matrice théorique qu’est le pragmatisme. Puis, dans un deuxième temps, nous cherchons à répondre à ces critiques en montrant comment l’importance de l’éducation et du commun dans la théorie de Dewey permet de répondre à ces critiques en consolidant la pensée d’Alinsky.

The practice of community organizing is still little known in France and raises questions. Is it a political practice that is really liberating ? Recent managerial and liberal abuses have made numerous activists suspicious. To answer this, we will first of all question the theoretical positions of Saul Alinsky in the light of those of John Dewey. The comparative study of the convergences and the differences of these two authors will thus allow us then to precisely formulate the criticisms of community organizing based on its theoretical framework that is pragmatism. Then we will try to answer these criticisms by showing how the importance of education and the common good in the theory of Dewey allows us to answer these criticisms by strengthening Alinsky’s position.
