Why underscore the notion of corporeity in Francis Scott Fitzgerald's most two famous novels ? Because The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night are structured around this concept. The study of characterization shows that the body essentially functions as the main support of identification. Corporeal fragmentation mirrors the gap between appearance and being, heralding the atomization of the individual bereft of his social and personal identity. The bridging of that gap, which also disrupts the textual cohesion depends on the narrative voice. In The Great Gatsby cohesion is controlled by the narrator's moral scheme, which values the immaterial and rejects the body. Conversely, in Tender is the Night the text is no longer reconstructed within a moral frame, but on the idea of the overmastering body, bringing about the modern problematics of liberty.
